One old yellow leaf is normal. Several at once is usually water or light.
A slow yellowing of a basal leaf while a new one opens is ordinary cycling. Fast, soft yellows in wet soil: too much water. Crisp yellow with a bone-dry mix: drought or sunburn.
Cream patches turning yellow on a variegated leaf are not a nitrogen shortage. That is usually scorch or aging white tissue.
Read the roots too. A sour smell and black nodes mean rot — cut to healthy tissue before you water again.
